Teaching Method

The teaching method adheres to the practice of the Karaikudi vina tradition without compromise in technique. Within the methods of COMET (Correlated Objective Music Education and Training), the study of the vina reflects a holistic engagement with the fundamental principles of Karnatak music as upheld in this bani. The essential elements of Karnatak music – sruti, sthana, svara, laya and gamaka – are learnt with meticulous attention to detail. This comprehensive approach equips students with the ability to self-learn compositions effectively and to move fluidly across musical styles with accuracy and depth.

Every student is required to begin with the ‘basics of the basics’: basic left- and right-hand techniques, including learning the right plucking technique and the correct placement of fingers on the frets. This is followed by fundamental exercises that follow the stylistic elements of the Karaikudi vina tradition, gradually progressing towards the advanced levels.

A student’s progress reflects not only their individual aptitude but, above all, their commitment to practice. The approach, though demanding, ensures that once the fundamentals are mastered on the vina, the skills remain with the student permanently, making it significantly easier to comprehend and respond to the more complex aspects of Karnatak music.
